On June 16th, the CCIG conducted an operational meeting on the production and delivery of an oral statement under Item 6 – Adoption of UPR Outcomes of the UN Human Rights Council (HRC). Organized in partnership with DKA Austria and FastenAktion, the meeting was addressed to the following Nepali organizations: Community Self-Reliance Centre (CSRC), Social Work Institute (SWI) and Consortium of Organizations Working for Child Participation (Consortium Nepal).
The meeting began with an explanation of the HRC Item 6, which serves to formally adopt recommendations from the preceding session of the Universal Periodic Review. During the 51st session of the UPR, held in January 2026, the aforementioned NGO partners strongly advocated for the inclusion of recommendations related to the right to food, access to land, and minority groups, as well as the rights of women and youth in rural areas to be addressed to Nepal, with the support of the CCIG. Now that the Nepali government has clarified its position on such recommendations (see addendum), NGOs have the opportunity to present an oral statement in the HRC to call for prompt and effective implementation of relevant UPR recommendations.
On June 16th, CCIG held a meeting with the partners to prepare for this intervention. During the meeting, CCIG provided the partners with insights on the methodology to draft their oral statement for successful receipt by the Human Rights Council. To that end, their intervention will be grounded in the UPR recommendations framework and in factual data highlighted in the UPR submissions previously presented to the UN (CSRC and SWI). Throughout the meeting, it was made clear that local civil society actors are at the forefront of the drafting process, deciding which issues to highlight based on their on-the-ground expertise. Participants shared their appreciation for the interactive and informative nature of the meeting.
The CCIG concluded by outlining how partners could structure their production process to ensure readiness by Item 6 deadlines, along with inputs for facilitating a successful submission process.
Through this technical support, the CCIG aims to elevate the voices of local civil society actors in Item 6 of the HRC session, and looks forward to continuing to support the realization of this oral statement until its official delivery on June 30th.
